Course Overview

This apprenticeship prepares individuals to support teachers in enhancing learning and development for children and young people across education settings.

You will develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to support learners individually and in small groups, promote positive learning behaviours and contribute to a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment. The programme focuses on supporting progress, adapting learning activities and working effectively with teachers and other education professionals.

By the end of the apprenticeship, you will be confidently supporting learners of different abilities and needs to achieve their learning goals under the direction of a qualified teacher.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will:

Teaching Assistants work with learners across all age ranges and abilities, including SEND, EAL and disadvantaged learners.

End point assessment confirms occupational competence against the apprenticeship standard.

Assessment Methods

Observation with questions

  • Minimum duration: 110 minutes

  • Independent assessor observation

  • At least 4 questions

Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

  • Duration: 90 minutes

  • At least 10 questions

  • Portfolio of evidence required before gateway

Successful completion results in the award of an apprenticeship certificate.

To enter the EPA gateway, you must have:

  • Achieved English and Maths in line with apprenticeship funding rules

  • Submitted a portfolio of evidence

Reasonable adjustments may be available for apprentices with disabilities, health conditions or other specific needs. These are agreed with the employer, training provider and end point assessment organisation.
