Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard
Course Overview
This apprenticeship prepares practitioners to work confidently with children, young people and families, including carers, to achieve positive and sustainable change in their lives.
You will develop the skills, knowledge and judgement needed to recognise complex needs, assess risk, safeguard effectively and agree appropriate interventions or referrals. Your practice will be grounded in respect, curiosity and evidence based approaches, with a strong focus on improving outcomes and keeping people safe.
The apprenticeship supports reflective practice through regular supervision and encourages collaborative working with other professionals and organisations. By the end of the programme, your work will be making a real and measurable difference to the lives of children, young people and families.
Who Is This For?
This apprenticeship is suitable for:
Individuals already working with children, young people or families
Practitioners in care, education, youth, early years, safeguarding or community roles
Those progressing into specialist roles supporting vulnerable children and families
Learners able to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check
Pathway options
Option 1: Practitioner in Children’s Residential Care
You may work in settings such as:
- Children’s homes
- Residential special schools
- Secure children’s homes
You will take a lead role in placement planning and support children with their health, education, emotional and day to day needs. You will act as a professional parent and contribute to creating a safe, stable and nurturing environment.
Option 2: Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Within the Community
You may work in settings such as:
- Family homes
- Youth centres
- Early years and children’s centres
- Youth justice
- Education or community settings
You will focus on early intervention, safeguarding and managing risk across a wide range of needs, working across agencies to support independence and resilience.

You will develop specialist knowledge and skills in:

Role overview
As a Children, Young People and Families Practitioner, you will:
Work directly with children, young people and families to support positive change
Recognise and assess complex needs and risks
Agree interventions, plans or referrals collaboratively
Safeguard children and vulnerable adults
Work alongside professionals and agencies to improve outcomes
Use evidence based approaches and professional judgement
Reflect on and evaluate your practice regularly
Each piece of work will be different, requiring flexibility, critical thinking and ethical decision making.

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths must achieve this before end point assessment
